Standing on the shoulders of giants

For months the gathering of the top 200 had been carefully planned and prepared. The location was inspiring, the latest trending business author was invited and the agenda was packed. The topic was all about shifting mentality. The organization was part of the status quo, but would it be a winner tomorrow? The top leadership had a clear message, a clear dot on the horizon and had created two lists, one with companies most likely to lose tomorrow and one with companies most likely to win tomorrow. Their message was plain and simple, if nothing happens we will be on the losing list.

A wake-up call, like the one just described, is a good thing. Right? After such a meeting the top layer of the organization now has no more excuses not to take action. The message was clear and they even got a book! What else can you do? Well, building awareness is not that easy, if you want the awareness to be the fundament for change. Building awareness is of course a mean, but also a goal itself. Why? Because sustainable change can only be achieved if the awareness first is experienced by everybody involved. And secondly often there is a dot on the horizon, but the goal is not clear today and might change the day after.

Building awareness as an individual differs of course from building awareness in an organization. To build awareness in an organization, the organization needs both. Furthermore the organization needs to have a common framework to be able to talk about the future effectively and efficiently. Talking about the future means you want to talk about vision. What do you think the future will bring. Does everybody in the company understand the vision of the company. Is there a shared vision?

So who are those giants? To whom belong those shoulders, top leadership can stand on? Right, the giants are the high potentials in your organization. The people that really act as owners every day. Because they are aware of what’s happening outside and are aware of their own competencies and the organizational capabilities. They are sincerely interested in the behaviors of the owner, the founder or the executive team of the organization. They try to understand the vision of the organization. So why not involve them more when the organization looks at their vision and start strengthening your army of owners today.

Please share your thoughts on building awareness in your organization and what are your thoughts on creating a shared vision?
